Create your own Personal Mission Statement

I recently watched the movie Jerry Maguire for the first time. I do realise that this film has been around for quite a while, since 1996 in fact, however I have to admit that I had never actually watched the film all the way through. I became inspired when Jerry (Tom Cruise), after suffering a Nervous Breakdown writes a Mission Statement about perceived dishonesty in the sports management business and how he believes that it should be operated.

While writing his Mission Statement, Jerry held nothing back and the creation of it, ultimately put him on a path (not without obstacles) which led him toward the life he wanted for himself.

So with motivation as my greatest ally, I got to it, and created my Personal Mission Statement.

I wanted to share my idea with you and give you the opportunity to

Create your own Personal Mission Statement

What is a Mission Statement?

According to Wikipedia, a Mission Statement is “ a formal short written statement of the purpose of a company or organization. The mission statement should guide the actions of the organization, spell out its overall goal, provide a sense of direction, and guide decision-making. It provides “the framework or context within which the company’s strategies are formulated.”"

Mission statements often contain the Purpose and aim of the organization, a statement of some desired future state (vision), a statement of the key values the organization is committed to, and a statement of major goals.

Therefore, a Mission Statement is a kind of Guidebook for a successful Company or Organization. In essence it communicates to the Employees, Stockholders, Customers and Directors what the Company is, what it’s strengths are, what it’s goals are and how it plans to use it’s strengths to obtain it’s goals.

Why a Personal Mission Statement?

With the outline of a traditional Mission Statement described above, doesn’t it make sense to create the same kind of pledge for YOURSELF? Creating a document which states your personal Life’s Purpose, your Goals, your Strengths and Weaknesses and your Values is like having a blueprint to your future.

If you take the time to put all of your visions, thoughts and feelings about yourself, your life and your future into writing, sign it, date it and keep it in a place where you can see it everyday, the chances that you will follow through with your goals will be increased tenfold.

By stating a clear purpose you are putting all of your desires into action. When you merely give your desires attention, you are already opening up the possibility of their existence.

“There is one quality which one must possess to win, and that is definiteness of purpose, the knowledge of what one wants, and a burning desire to possess it.” -Napoleon Hill
