Imagine you’re standing in front of a Genie. The Genie offers you a choice between two magical boxes. One box is dull, ugly and boring and the Genie refers to it as the Consistence Box. The other is beautifully decorated and very unique in it’s design and is called the Sporadic Box.
Each box has different magical qualities, the Genie explains, as well as their own disadvantages.
The Consistence Box will magically produce $300 every week without fail, however choosing this box means that you must hand over your dreams, which are never to be fulfilled.
The Sporadic Box will magically produce all kinds of different money amounts, both large and small at any given time, however it may also have times where it produces nothing – by choosing the Sporadic Box you are handing over your sense of Security.
After explaining the properties of each box, the Genie tells you that you can change your decision at any time, however the consequences of each box will still remain the same.
The Genie awaits your answer – which will you choose?
Fear is your worst enemy
Does this analogy sound familiar to you?
Have you traded your dreams of a fulfilling life doing what you love for the security of a guaranteed paycheck each week? If your answer is yes, then it’s very likely you’re letting Fear rule your life.
Perhaps you never intended this to be your path, and you always knew you were going to follow your dreams ‘at some point’, however you seem to have gotten lost along the way. Or maybe your current status was only meant to be temporary, just to tide you over until you could afford to follow your dreams, or until the time was right.
Here is a newsflash for you, with both of the excuses above, they are exactly that – EXCUSES.
Don’t let Fear rule your life.
Time is too precious to be wasted. Before you know it you will have put your dreams aside for 10, 15 or 20 years and will be wondering what the hell happened to your life.
There is no ‘perfect’ time for anything, that is just a disguise of FEAR.
Everyone is afraid to move forward, take a plunge into the unknown or take a risk, however that’s why there are such Amazing rewards for those who do take that plunge! The financial status of doing what you love may not be as consistent as having that trusted weekly paycheck, however, the financial and emotional rewards do also have the potential to be over and above your wildest dreams.
Isn’t that worth the risk?
A courageous person is someone who is afraid, but who takes action anyway.
Don’t let Fear convince you that you should wait to follow your dreams. Don’t let Fear convince you that you aren’t good enough, or that you’re going to fail anyway, or that it’s too late now. It’s never too late to be happy, fulfilled, excited and passionate about what you do with your life and how you bring value to others.
Consider Courage
Just for a moment, play a game with yourself:
‘If I were Courageous in my circumstance, what would I be doing?’
Think for a few moments about what actions you would take toward fulfilling your dreams and choosing the Sporadic Box. If you had the courage to do what you love, what would that mean?
Naturally, there are going to be pros and cons associated with a change like this, take a few minutes to think about them, or better yet, write them down.
You could use our New Path Worksheet which will help you to consider your options and see your dreams in a new perspective.
Choose the Path Less Travelled
Choosing the Consistency box, although in the short term may seem like the smarter choice, in the long run will rob you of your character, happiness and sense of self. To trade your Dreams for Security is a very unfair trade and one that I don’t believe is worth consideration.
Having the Courage to choose your dreams and a life you love by offering your talents and passion to others is what life is all about. We were not put here on earth to simply ‘Get By’. We each have been given a set of likes, dislikes, traits, talents, passions, and characteristics. These elements define who we are, and they are meant to be used for more than just a JOB.
Think for a moment about the wonderful gifts and talents courageous people of the world have already given us. Stephen Spielberg gave us his Films, W.A. Mozart gave us his wonderful music, JK Rowling her exciting books, Henry Ford mass produced the Motor Car, Thomas Edison gave us the incredible gift of the Electric Light Bulb, as well as countless others who had the courage to take the path less travelled and follow their heart, in turn giving us something we didn’t have before.
We each have something to offer and something we love to do. That is the essence of our lives. The trick is discovering it, and then having the courage to use it to enrich the lives of others.
Find your courage and stop letting FEAR call the shots. YOU are in control of your life and only YOU. Acknowledge the worries, thoughts and reminders that Fear is constantly whispering to you and gently sweep them aside. You have the choice to be either an Average person who has chosen the safety of the Consistence Box, or someone who is Great and who takes the challenge of choosing the Sporadic Box.
Be bold and most of all, be true to yourself.
We are all amazing and talented in some area of life and we all have something truly Great to offer.
What will you offer to the world?
